Small bale haylage

As well as our popular 4ft round bales, we also produce small bale haylage for owners who only need a few bales at a time or have limited storage space.

Our small bale haylage is made from carefully selected grass, wilted to the correct moisture content before being baled and individually wrapped to preserve its freshness. They're ideal for private owners, small yards and anyone who prefers a bale that can be handled without specialist equipment.

Like all of our forage, we aim to produce clean, consistent, high-quality haylage that we'd be happy to feed to our own animals. Availability can vary from year to year depending on the season, so please get in touch if you're looking for small bale haylage or would like to reserve stock from the next harvest.

Frequently asked questions

What is haylage?

Haylage is grass that has been cut, partially dried (or wilted), baled and then sealed in airtight plastic wrap. Unlike hay, which is preserved by drying, haylage is preserved by a natural fermentation process inside the wrapped bale.

Is haylage better than hay?

Neither is automatically better. Both can make excellent forage when produced well. The right choice depends on your horse, how the forage has been made, and how it has been stored.

Does haylage contain more energy than hay?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions we hear from horse owners. The digestible energy of forage depends far more on the type of grass and when it was cut than whether it becomes hay or haylage.

Many commercial haylages are made from younger, leafier grass for performance horses, which is why they often contain more energy. However, hay made from the same crop on the same day would usually have very similar nutritional value.

We've written a more detailed guide explaining the difference between hay and haylage, including how they're made, their nutritional differences and how to choose the right forage for your horse

Is haylage suitable for horses with respiratory problems?

Many owners choose haylage for horses that are sensitive to dust because well-made haylage generally contains much less dust than hay.

Every horse is different though, so if your horse has a respiratory condition such as equine asthma or COPD, it's always worth discussing the most suitable forage with your vet.

How long does haylage last once opened?

Once a bale is opened, air begins to enter and the preservation process stops.

How long it remains in good condition depends on the weather and the size of the bale, but as a general guide:

Small bales are usually best used within 3 - 7 days.
Large round bales are ideally used within 5 - 10 days, particularly during warmer weather.

Always discard any forage that shows signs of mould, heating or spoilage.

How should haylage be stored?

Store wrapped bales on a clean, well-drained surface where they are protected from sharp objects and vermin that could damage the plastic.

Any holes in the wrap should be repaired as soon as possible using specialist bale repair tape to maintain the airtight seal.

What sizes of haylage do you sell?

We supply both conventional small bales and 1.2m (4 ft) round bales, subject to seasonal availability. Current stock levels and prices are shown on this page.

Do you deliver haylage?

Yes. Collection from the farm is always welcome, and we can also arrange local delivery across Dorset and into parts of Somerset and Wiltshire, depending on quantity and distance.

Please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
